Aids identified in 1980s: various explanation as to why the growth --> e. g. aids persisting when many were saying that medicine was on the verge of defeating infectious diseases (showed the problem wasn"t going away) Sars, concerns about pandemic influenza (partly due to bird flu - emerging flu strain in birds: september 11th, anthrax --> bioterrorism, patents on pharmaceuticals --> partly related to aids epidemic; intellectual property rights.
