Extreme right populism: appeals to the newly enfranchised lower middle classes. Felt threatened by big capitalists: competition from industry, department stores, banks that raised high interests. Also threatened by migration (newcomers started small businesses) Anti-semitism everywhere in europe: blame on the jews: who dominate business, the press, and buy politicians; threaten national character close borders on them, restrict their citizen rights, etc . Industrial and agrarian crisis of 1870s and 80s. Migration of jews, especially to austria, germany, france. + unease about rapid rise of the rich and their power. New style in politics: abusive language, especially against jews, threats of street violence, disliked by elites and socialists; but supported by lower middle classes. Zionism as a logical reaction: jews can only be safe if they have their own state. But also: a new, more emotional style in politics, xenophobia, violence. In 1920: all 35 european states west of the soviet union had democratically elected legislative assemblies.
