Document Summary

In post-colonial africa, there is no congruence between states and nations: almost all governments are based on ethnic groups and coalitions. Pre-colonial relationship between hutu and tutsi: ancestors of the people now known as hutu and tutsi, have settled in the region of rwanda over a period of almost 2000 years. They were organized in a number of small groups according to loyalty to one particular leader or family heredity. In the countries evolutionary process, a common language ( kinyarwanda) was established as well as a common culture, set of beliefs and religions. Most of the inhabitants of the region were cultivators, whilst only a minority of the population were pastoralists, depending on large herds of cattle. Rwanda emerged as a major state, its authorities measured an individual"s wealth according to the number of cattle he would own. Nevertheless, rwandan institutions were composed of both pastoralists and cultivators, each carrying out vital professions.
