PSYC 2650 Final: PSYC 2650 Cognitive notes
Document Summary
Cognitive neuroscience: the effort towards understanding our mental functioning by close study of the brain and nervous system. Cognition was firstly focused on the scientific study of knowledge (how knowledge is acquired; retained; used making decisions/problem solving) Memory is needed for everything from the telling of a short story to conversations. Without memory you would need to go in depth about everything. H. m. lost his memory after brain surgery. Comments that without the knowledge of what he has done he doesn"t have a self". Cognitive psychology: scientific study of the acquisition, retention and the use of knowledge. Knowledge is relevant to a huge range of concerns; self-concept, emotional adjustments, or simpler ability to understand a story, or understanding any of our experiences by supplementation it with some knowledge. Centered on a small number of key ideas: the science of psychology cannot study the mental world directly, the science of psychology must study the mental world in order to understand behaviour.
