Physiology the study of structure and function of a normal living organism and its component parts, including all chemical and physical processes. Physiologists study the mechanism to understand the function. Key themes in physiology: structure&function, biological energy, information ow, homeostasis. Homeostasis keeping the internal environment relatively stable to cope with the variability of the external environment (similar + condition), stability of the extracellular uid compartment. Acclimatization environmentally induced change in physiological function with no genetic change. Local control the simplest homeostatic control takes place at the tissue or cell level, effects are on neighbouring cells. Re ex control cells at a distant site such as the brain control the response (usually via the nervous or endocrine system) Negative feedback the response opposes or removes the original stimulus, which in turn stops the response loop. Positive feedback the response reinforces the stimulus rather than decreasing or removing it.
