Document Summary

There is unequal distribution of goods and services. Economy stimulates inequality and produces the goods and services in a society. Reciprocity, we all receive, give and repay. Marcel mauss, found gifts circulate in non capitalist societies similar to french economy: kinship is basic economic principal to show who gets gifts, reciprocity makes relationships. Power may be determined when one gives more than the other can repay. Generalized reciprocity, continuous mutual debt, we don"t try to keep track of gifts. This is for people closest in our lives. Imbalanced reciprocity, we keep track of gifts with people. Negative reciprocity, usually for people outside our community, like a stranger. Moral being, to be respected, loved, honors their debts: give and receive appropriate amount based on class, gender and status, failing to be honorable is failing to repay debts (make them feel shame and embarrassment) Reciprocity binds us together and produces relationships. It measures and mandates exchanges, essential to marriage, family and society.
