I. Power and Influence Approach !
Power:!
-power: the capacity to influence others !
-Other definitions of power exist, eg social power is asymmetric contra over
valued resources and social relations !
-influence: the process of affecting others’ beliefs, attitudes, values, and/or
behaviour !
French and Raven’s 6 Bases of Individual Power
Position Power: who you are in an organization, what someone has from having higher
status (not about you, but your role within an organization)!
-Legitimate!
-Reward!
-Coercive!
-Information!
Personal Power: who you are and what others think about you !
-referent !
-Expert !
1. Legitimate power !
-they have the right to tell us what to do (political leaders, police, etc)!
-This power can come from various thing (electoral, social hierarchy, social norms,
etc)!
