Document Summary

Motivation: the process of acting, guiding and maintaining behavior. Inspired by charles darwin"s theory of natural selection. Psychologist william james argued that humans too are driven by instincts. Instinct theory: an approach to the study of motivation that suggests that actions, thoughts, and intents are the result of our biological and genetic programming. *biological, unlearned patterns of behavior are the driving force behind your behaviors. Provides a description, but doesn"t do a good job explaining behavior. Fallen out of popularity with psychologists as a way to explain human motivation; however, the basic idea that humans are driven by genetically determined factors is accurate: drive to drink water, eat, sleep etc. Drive reduction theory: the idea that biological needs create a state of tension that motivates an organism to satisfy those needs. Drive: an internal tension that occurs when biological needs are not met. Unbalanced state need drive motivation to act state of balance repeat.
