Document Summary

Learning: a relatively permanent change in behavior that results from practice and experience. Habituation: a decline in response to stimuli that have become familiar. Most basic form of learning and can be seen in almost all animals; necessary for survival. Example: sleeping in a busy city; at first, the sounds of night life may be disruptive to your sleep, but your brain eventually learns these sounds are not dangerous and you start to ignore them. Sensitization: an increase in response to stimuli that are dangerous or threatening. Instead of ignoring sound, you would focus in on it. Example: getting shocked every day when someone touches you would make you more sensitive to touch even without the shock. Biological preparedness: a genetic predisposition to learn some associations and responses more readily than others. Humans are biologically prepared to learn some behaviors very quickly, especially when our survival as a species depends on it.
