Document Summary

Emotions are a soft topic because they are totally abstract: they affect you but have no physical substance, they can only be described in terms of other emotions. Emotions have a physiological though: they effect the entire person, the whole organism responds to emotions. The brain has evolved its own emotional reflexes: we pull away from a snake without even consciously thinking to do so. To study emotions, we need data beyond self reports: emotions are correlated through physiology, they are associated with the arousal of the autonomic nervous system. Autonomic nervous system (ans) has 2 sub systems: sympathetic nervous system (sns) Heart rate increases, adrenaline kicks in: parasympathetic nervous system (pns) Yerkes dodson laws: to function effectively, the proper degree of arousal is needed. Arousal: more difficult tasks require less arousal to be performed well. Both nervous systems are on, but to different degrees at different times: opponent process principle.
