Norms we develop as a group of people. The roles of symbols, language, and values in culture: symbol- meanings attached to things. Recognized by people who share a culture: language- allows people to communicate to one another, values- culturally de ned standards of desirability, goodness, and beauty, which serve as a broad guideline for social living. What are subculture, counterculture, and their differences: subculture- differ from larger society, but do not argue against any of the larger groups. Punk rock, amish as an example: counterculture - terrorists, skinheads, kkk, all argue against the larger groups (govt. ) and break tons of laws. Material and non-material culture: material culture- culture that has material values. Semper ii: non-material culture - caring for the environment as an example. Wherever you go, there will be similarities between cultures. Culture shock: culture shock -inability to realize what is going on around you in another culture. Symbols: symbols - anything that carries a meaning throughout culture.
