Terministic screens: kenneth burke, language systems determine an individuals perception and symbolic action in the world, a screen composed of terms through which humans perceive the world, and direct attention away from some interpretations and toward others , language we choose to use will represent our reality, similar to linguistic relativism. Characteristics of symbols: flexible/ malleable, arbitrary, useful, powerful actual object. Definition of man: humans are the symbol creators, users and misusers, rotten with perfection, inventors of the negative, goaded by the spirit of the hierarchy, makes of their own human instruments. 6 c"s of effective language use: clear, concise, concrete, colorful/creative, culturally sensitive, correct. Adapters: body movements that help receivers interpret and better attend to what is being said verbally (talking with your hands, body movements that are employed to help guide conversations (head nods, body movements that satisfy physical or psychological needs, rarely intent to communicate anything but are good signals of the sender"s physiological/psychological state.
