Ranks of aristocracy: duke highest, james is liberal with titles, created baronet hereditary knighthood. James i creates a lot of plantations in ireland. 1541 henry viii declared himself king of ireland. The pale region of ireland where english exercised real authority. Henry vii breaks from catholicism and creates church of england. By the time james comes, only five percent of england is catholic.
