• Labeling theory – if you are not caught and labeled as deviant, you are not deviant
• Self-labeling theory – you can still feel guilty if you are deviant, but nobody knows it
Social Structure
• Ordered and persisting relationship among positions in a social system
o People occupy one or more positions in the structure, and each position brings with it expectations
and stereotypes
▪ You can be both a woman and upper class, you can be both a male and working class –
leads to sometimes conflicting expectations
▪ Social capital – knowing the right people, having the right connections that can help you get
a job or get into whatever group you want to be in
Categories of Norms
• Folkways: norms not strictly enforced
o a man walking down the street without his shirt on
• Mores: norms thought to be essential to core values which require conformity
o a man walking down the street without his bottoms on
• Taboos: a norm so strongly engrained, that even the thought of its violation is greeted with revulsion
o eating a human being
