Darwin was not the first one to look into evolution. Darwin is special because he came up with the mechanism by which evolution occurs. Principle figures in the history of evolutionary thought. Carl von linne" (1707-1778) aka carolus linaeus. A species was fixed in it"s characteristics, and unchangeable, immutable (not able to mutate) after their creation by god. A suite of traits uniquely defined each species, and every member of that species had to have that suite of traits. You could not change the essence, because then you"d have to change the species, and one species could not change into another species. He was interested in the overarching traits of a species. Created the first process by which a species could change over time. Disuse leads to a reduction in size or their loss: these changes in organs that occur during one"s lifetime become inheritable and can be transferred to one"s offspring.
