Document Summary

Be prepared to take ideas we"ve discussed in class and apply them in new areas. Be able to explain to me how the energy from the sun made its way to fuel active transport in my cells. Particular emphasis should be placed on nucleus, ribosomes, mitochondria, and chloroplasts: know what structures are found in what kind of cells (is a nucleoid found in eukaryotes or prokayrotes, etc). What chemical is needed to supply energy for active transport: know osmosis. Know the differences in solute concentration (relative to fluid within cell) in hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic solutions. Test yourself quite a bit on this, students tend to get stuck on this material. How does that impact the wilting of a plant? (see figure 5-10 in the text): remember the demonstration in class. Definitions: potential vs. kinetic energy; work; entropy; reactants; products; endergonic; exergonic; activation energy; energy carrier molecule; coupled reaction; adp; atp;
