Primates: non-human primates are very intelligent, chimpanzees are mean and aggressive, also very strong, gorillas are calm, mostly vegetarian, not terrifying beasts like first thought to be. Taxonomy: 4 major groups: prosimians, new world monkeys, old world monkeys, apes. Primate studies: descriptive- earliest trend of describing, observational- long-term observational studies where researchers spend years in the field bringing people in to form their own research studies. Social relationships among chimpanzees: dian fossey- studied the mountain gorilla, theoretical- hypothesis driven, behavioral ecology- looks at relationship between environment and behavior, sociobiology- relationship between genes and behavior. Limbs and locomotion: erect posture, hands and feet- have 5 digits (fingers and toes) on each hand and foot.
