BIOL 1001 : Biology Notes Exam 3
Document Summary
Red blood cell wants" to be in an isotonic environment. To do this it must control its internal environment: must control the concentration of solute in the cell. Isotonic is an equal concentration of solute compared to the inside of the cell. Hypertonic is a greater concentration of solute than inside of a cell( (higher outside) Hypotonic is a lower concentration of a solute than the inside of a cell (lower outside) More is going in than is coming out. *when water is scarce, the central vacuole shrinks and the cell wall is not supported. Water is trying to rush in. as this happens, the cell is swelling. I starts exerting pressure as water tries to get in. (osmotic pressure) *perfect situation for plant. Pressure against the cell wall gives stability, allows plant to stand up. Water is higher in lower solute, so it moves. 2 f 4 f cl k f can move.
