Document Summary

Circulatory systems link exchange surfaces with cells throughout the body: transport systems functionally connect the organs of exchange with the body cells. Gastrovascular cavities: simple animals like cnidarians have a body wall only 2 cell layers thick between external environment and gastrovascular cavity, gastrovascular cavity functions both in digestion and circulation. More complex animals have two types of circulatory systems: open circulatory system: blood bathes the organs directly, closed circulatory system: blood is confined to vessels and is distinct from the interstitial fluid. Circulatory system parts: both these types of systems have three basic components, a circulatory fluid (blood, a set of tube (blood vessels, a muscular pump (the heart) Coordinated cycles of heart contraction drive double circulation in mammals. The mammalian cardiovascular system: pulmonary, closed loop between heart and lungs, systemic, every where else, know circulation route. The cardiac cycle: cardiac cycle: rhythmic contraction and relaxation of the heart, systole: contraction or pumping phase, diastole: relaxation, or filing phase.
