Monocot: ex) corn, seedlings each have 1 cotyledon (seed leaf, in monocots the cotyledon often remains within the confines of the seed, coleoptile look up. Eudicot: ex) bean, seedlings each have 2 cotyledons (seed leaves). Every single cell is diploid arose from pre-existing cells: part above the ground: shoot system, part below the ground: root system, usually found below the ground some exceptions. Primary root first to appear: dicot taproot system: single main root grows straight down and then there is branching laterally, monocot fibrous root system. All roots are at the base of the plant. Different functions of roots: root hairs found on may angiosperms. Individual skin cells grow out increasing contact area with the land surrounding. Roots; knees: not photosynthetic not green.
