The level and effects of the nutrient nitrogen in aquatic ecosystems involving the. Introduction: ecology is the study of how different organisms interact with their environment and in this experiment the biotic and abiotic factors of lsu campus lakes were observed. More specifically the experiment involved chlamydomonas which are a genus of green alga. They are unicellular flagellates that are often found in aquatic systems (hanikenne 2003). In this experiment definite nitrogen amounts were applied to a chlamydomonas population to see if the density of the population would be significantly affected. So the specific question for the experiment was will nitrogen content significantly affect chlamydomonas quantity? with this in mind, the abundance of an organism may be affected by bottom-up control; resources available in lower levels limit them. Several nutrients are necessary for primary productivity, and include phosphate, nitrite, nitrate, and ammonium. Lakes usually obtain these nutrients after rain washes them from nearby soils (bechtold et al 2003).
