CMST 2040 : CMST 2040 MIDTERM REVIEW
Document Summary
Midterm review: define performance studies (oral interpretation)- the process of dialogic engagement with one"s own and other"s aesthetic communication through the means of performance. Aesthetic communication-a culturally specified act in which a speaker structures language in a unified and expressive manner triggering audience response. 16-17: when performers engage in aesthetic text, there first task is to make sense of what is being said. When performers engage in a dialogue between themselves and audience members, they strive to make their presentations meaningful. In short, performers hear, in the most profound sense, multiple voices. Performers maintain a sense of self identity in order to question points of difference and see different perspectives and to feel what cannot be articulated: the self asserts itself. In staging aesthetic texts, performers strive for artistic expression, an aesthetic encounter between themselves and audience members. To do so they learn techniques of art. Through their enactments performers learn most fully about aesthetic utterances.
