1. What is management? The process of achieving desired results through the
efficient use of human and material resources and through the utilization of
effectiveness and efficiency.
2. What are the 2 key concerns of management? Effectiveness and Efficiency
3. What is effectiveness concerned with? efficiency? Effectiveness is concerned
with doing the right thing in the right time, in the right way. Goal
attainment. Efficiency is concerned with reducing waste or minimizing
resource costs since many resources are scarce. “Getting more bang for your
buck.”
4. How are effectiveness and efficiency related? More concerned with efficiency,
the harder it is to effective. When you try too hard to cut costs, you can lose
sight of your goals. Effective companies tend to be different.
5. What is your important resource as a manager? HR is people. Injellitance is
importance + jealousy. It’s a big threat. Effects staffing and leading.
6. Is management art or science? When is it considered a science? an art? Both. It’s
science because we develop theories of managing and then test them using the
scientific method with empirical evidence. It is an art because it’s an
extension of peoples’ personalities. It can not all be taught and there are
many different management styles that can be successful. Equaifinality
means many different roads to success. Many different mgt styles that can
work depending on the situation.
7. How did management become important and why is it still significant today?
Skilled craftsman use machinery and division of labor. Skilled labor
decrease.

industrial revolution? Skills of craftsman go to machine. Owner Manager
something. Productivity goes up. Prices go down. Production increased,
prices decreased, and demand increase

managers have responsibility over production. Another name for production
is transformation. Where raw materials get changed into goods and services.
Line of authority or chain of command is where line managers are. Staff
managers are support managers. Experts in one area and support the line
managers. Staff manager has no authority. They can offer advice. Staff
managers more expendable in corporate downsizing. Line managers located
in all managers. Staff managers in middle.
17. What is the difference between a functional manager and a general manager?
Overseeing one versus many activities. Accounting or Finance manager is
functional. A VP oversees a lot so general manager. Most general manager is
CEO. General management is more difficult. General management requires
more conceptual skills. Functional require more technical skills.

recruitment, selection, training, compensation, and retention. Not about

you can keep them. Leading: getting people to go along because they want to.
Motivation, direction, communication, resolving conflict. Controlling: feed
back. What you’re doing right and wrong to continue or correct it.

to develop.
