Struggle to gain power and then keep power. They had changes of leadership that didn"t make things any better. They were terrified that other people would find out what they were doing. They did not want people to be able to navigate so they changed the maps of their country. Glasnost: opening, starting to open the secret archives, dramatic change of a secret culture for over 50 years. Perestroika: restructuring the economy, small efforts towards privatization open little businesses, started to allow free travel, allow more americans to visit the soviet union. Under the soviets they were obligated to provide housing for all of the citizens they were not attractive & they could not afford big spaces for all of the people. People often lived with their parents even until after they were married because there were not enough apartments for everybody.
