GEOL 1001 : Geology Exam 1 Study Guide
Document Summary
Physical geology- examines the materials composing earth and seeks to understand the many processes that operate beneath and upon its surface. Historical geology- understand the origin of earth and its development through time. Catastrophism- earths landscape had been shaped by catastrophic events. Uniformitarianism- the physical, chemical, and biological laws that operate today have also operated in the geological past. Earth"s four spheres: hydropshere, atmosphere, biosphere, geosphere. Interface a common boundary where diff. parts a system interact. Nebular hypothesis: composed hydrogen and helium, begin to contract 5 billion years ago, assumes a flat, disk shape with proto sun at center. Inner planets form from metallic and rocky substances. Lithosphere- consist of the entire crust and uppermost mantle and forms relatively cool outershell: asthenosphere-beneath lithosphere to a depth of about 410 km soft comparitvely weak layer, mesosphere. Inner and outer core outer core is liquid and responsible for magenetic poles.
