Decline and fall of roman empire: marcus arelieas - last of the good emperors, external problems. Germans grouped in clans of 5-10 families. Men were warriors and hunters, all other work was done by women and slaves. Loyalty to the chief was how the tribes were run. Chief had a small group of very close followers who were always with him, whos job was to fight. First germans to go into rome were slaves. 3rd were german settlers setting up a life on the border. Around 2nd century ad romans encouraged germans to settle along border which made them available to be drafted into the roman army. 4th they came as conquerors in the 5th century ad, when they came as settlers they adopted. Roman culture and many became christians: parthian empire (persia) Always a threat, but never a threat to rome. Loss of population may be a cause (perhaps 25% between 250 and 400 ad)
