First civilization: sumeria (look on sylabus for revised test schedule!!!) About 8500 bc sumerians domesticated plants & animals. Mesopotamia: greek word that means between the rivers. Sumerians discovered that certain grasses could be domesticated (plant seeds that will grow and could be pounded into flour that can essentially be used to make bread, oatmeal, etc. Also discovered that the grains could be stored (winter) Earliest form of plant is called emmer (wheat) Period is called neolithic period (stone age) 8500 b. c. As you go up the rivers there are more and more trees (can be cut down by an ax, which was discovered in this period) With this new food there was better nutrition, no starvation, which eventually led to a population growth. Agricultures takes place along the river because this a place of no rain, so the river aggregates the plants. Sumerians build irrigation systems (channels, canals, levees, etc) Environmental challenges (flooding, death, etc) was caused by the gods.
