Document Summary

Include examples from the pre-ww i period as well as the two world wars. With the industrial revolution came the steam engine and the power of machines. This caused countries to try and seize up as much land and raw material as possible. Emperialism: (a country s control over another country) colonization, race and compete for land/raw goods, nationalism, and alliances. This chain reaction set off a world war. Machines that increased labor power were now being designed to increase killing power. Weapons and troops could now be transported by steam power. (railways) Advanced rifles and artillery left military planners clueless on defensive tactics. This left the war at a stalemate until a country could manufacture a better weapon. Germany had large chemical supply, and started using chlorine weapons to try and break stalemate. Tank, plane, and submarines were all introduced as weapons. The growing demand for these machine weapons increased the need for raw supplies and further territory expansion.
