Large number of americans never chose, some just picked who they followed by what group was in town at that time. Africans remained loyal and ran to british because they were offered rewards if they stayed loyal to the king- offered freedom: the fighting. The odds are in favor of british- 11 million british and 2 million colonists. Hard for british to win because its 3000 miles away. They underestimate the will of the colonists. Have to subdue population in order to win- hard to do. Professional army- young poor men join the army who don"t have land. French aid- want british to lose, form alliance with america and send over fleet, money, and leaders which is crucial to winning the revolution; provide money, training, and a navy and need money.
