Harper"s ferry (present day harper"s ferry, west virginia) 2 day standoff in which time 10 of john brown"s men were killed by sharp shooters. John brown was executed and was a martyr for the abolishment of slavery. There was a cultural difference between the african born slaves and american blacks. The wife of a carpenter taught him how to read. He was rented out to another farm and was whipped for the 1st time. He ran away and then returned cause he couldn"t survive out in the woods and went back to slavery. Renamed himself after a heroic character in a novel he read (by the author of ivanhoe) got rid of his slave name. He got false papers to get on a ship to boston and reinvented himself. In 1844 till civil war he regularly addressed crowds and worked on his autobiography. Moved to new york where there was a strong abolitionist crowd and also religious strong hold.
