Freedom started being pushed for during the reconstruction period. 14th amendment-any natural born person was a citizen. After emancipation, people began to define what freedom was: end to injustices of slaver and rights and obligations of citizenship. The wanted to own property, have pets and own clothes and other things. After civil war, many made attempts at giving land to african americans. Freedman"s bureau also worked on providing food and clothing. Johnson did later make many return the distributed land to the original owner. Black codes did give the right to ownership, marriage and courts. It, however, denied the right to vote, testify against a white or be on a jury. Homestead act helped to give people land to farm on. Although life as a farmer was very difficult, it helped give people freedom and financial security. Many were able to save up enough money to buy a house. Many would delay marriage to get double the amount of land.
