Document Summary

Fears, problems and responses to changes in american society: characteristics of emerging society. People are turning to experts, people who can explain what is going on. They"re answering questions about the world that americans do not understand. Protestant is still dominant, but lots of jews and catholics. Giant corporations now exist and are operating nationally. On the positive side, most people are happy. But some still want to go back to the rural nation. You can now work for cash and there"s a wide array of new objects. There"s a sense that american"s have lost their independence. For the average america, they feel decisions are made by people far away with no connection to them. (railroad rates cotton prices ) americans also believe they are losing their confidence. The opportunity to rise from nothing seems to have dissipated. They believe that economic uncertainty is on the rise. They worry about these new immigrants diluting the purity of america.
