Dominated by adults who aren"t trained as teachers: first mistake made assume children are miniature adults, organized from adult point of view with no regard to what children want. Adults insist they are qualified to coach because of personal participation. Too often youth programs are adult rec programs. Determine when and how long practice will be. Some coaches believe this is how you make children tough. Bone growth more rapid than muscle development so bones & joints lack normal protection of covering muscles. Emotional ramifications: 11 year old boys, 2 groups, competed every day baseball, football, tug, emphasis on winning, began as fun, turned into hostility. Recognize them as individuals rather than as projects in leisure. Players on the court can be removed from the game for foul language as well as spectators: be a good role model. Ability to cooperate is more important than the ability to compete. Winning and losing are temporary, friendships last forever.
