Document Summary
Salinity- amount of salt: marine- salty, freshwater- barely any salt. Zooplankton- small herbivorous animals: plankton- weak swimming abilities go with the flow. Ultraplankton- extremely small photosynthetic bacteria that are important primary produces in oceans surface. Nekton- strong swimmers: fish, turtles, whales, etc. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity, food availability, light availability, and nutrients- determine which animals occupy which marine ecosystems: depth and water flow also determine species. Turbidity- from algae or sediment, important factor of primary production. Coastal zone- nutrient rich area between high tide mark and edge of continental shelf. Intertidal organism- must deal with considerable changes in temperature and salinity as the tide changes. Barrier beaches and barrier islands- important for storm protection. Euphotic- the zone at the surface where considerable photosynthesis occurs, even though nutrients are low. Bathyl zone- dimly lit layer where many fishes and invertebrates living during the day. Abyssal zone- cold and dark, high diversity even through no photosynthesis, allochthonous- rain of dead organisms.
