Document Summary

Chapter summarys and vocab (book-- think: theatre felner 2013) I just used the summarys in the back of each chapter to outline. We didn"t cover ch. 6/10 so those aren"t on here. And i ran out of time so the ch 13-15 aren"t included but they are relatively easy and we just took that test! Empathy: capacity to identify emotionally with the characters on stage (pathos). Asides: reveal character"s inner thoughts (often comically) Soliloquies: long speeches which reveals a character"s state of mind. Realism: 19th century the audience is asked to accept the stage as reality. Aesthetic distance: ability to observe with detachment and impartiality. Climatic structure (aristotelian plot): limits scope of events, the time in how they play out and number of characters. Exposition: events that occurred before the play are revealed (usually through soliloquy or monologue) Archetypal characters: embody significant human traits that enable them to speak across cultures and centuries.
