Know the various phases of ventricular systole and ventricular diastole. Contrast the
relationship between pressure and flow into and out of the left and right ventricles
during each phase of the cardiac cycle
There is a massive difference in the PRESSURES in
the right and left side of the heart
Left heart very high pressure; right heart has a
lower pressure; structurally, the left ventricle is very
thick (lots of muscle mass)
Pulmonary artery pressure (pulmonary pressure)
behaves very similarly to the aortic pressure (systemic
pressure)
Pulmonary pressure will be falling in late diastole,
and then as the right ventricular pressure rises,
pulmonary pressure also rises as the pulmonary valve
opens up; and then pulmonary pressure starts to drop,
has a rebound effect [dichortic notch] similar to the aortic pressure (the
behaviour patter is very siilar, it’s just that the aout of pressure is very
different)
Systemic pressure has a very high pressure because it needs to get the blood to
all the organs that need it, while pulmonary pressure has a lower pressure so
that oxygen exchange can be facilitated in the lungs
Although the pressures are different between right side and left side of the
heart, the VOLUMES are the SAME
