Intro to Sports Psychology
*Two main objectives: Understand the effects of psychological factors on physical performance
and understand the effects of participating in physical activity on psychological well-being.
1.) Who uses sports psych?
a. Anyone seeking to improve performance
1. Youth, high school, college
2. Exercisers, elders, physically/mentally challenged
3. Coaches, teachers, fitness professionals
4. Business professionals, musicians, etc.
2.) Specialties
a. Clinical sports psych: Licensed, works with athletes with clinically diagnosed issues-
eating disorders, substance abuse, etc.
b. Educational sports psych: Mental coach, trained in PE/sports sciences, works with
athletes and coaches on performance enhancement.
3.) History of Sports Psych
a. Period 1: 1895-1920
1. 1897- Norman Triplett, Indiana University. Conducts 1st sports psych experiment
on audience effect of cycling
2. 1918- Coleman Griffith, U of Illinois. Conducts informal studies of football and
basketball.
b. Period 2: 1921-1938
1. Coleman Griffith: Father of American sports psychology, developed first sports
psych lab, helped initiate one of the first coaching schools in America and wrote
Psychology of Coaching and Psychology of Athletes
c. Period 3: 1939-1965
1. Franklin Henry, UC Berkeley. Developed scientific aspect and created discipline
of exercise and sports science. Trained young physical educators who reshaped
curriculums and developed sports exercise science.
