Lecture 2: famous fossil localities: dinosaur ridge in colorado is a geological structure called a fossil locality. Tilted layers of sedimentary rock make up the ridge. West side = morrison formation; late jurassic. Sauropods collected = apotosaurus, allosaurus, stegosaurus, & East side = dakota formation; early cretaceous. Big carnivore = tyrannosaurus rex: cleveland lloyd quarry; late jurassic. 67% of remains were of allosaurus: patagonia, argentina; cretaceous. Large carnivores = gigantosaurus carolinii & carnotaurus sastrei. / cools faster than water: pangaea began to break apart in early jurassic, epeiric seas = shallow seas over part of a continent. Usually happen w/ marine transgressions, when the sea overtops the land: 3 circumstances from jurassic to later cretaceous caused widespread epeiric seas. Widespread volcanoes on ocean floor; broke megacontinent apart increased co2 made earth warmer, preventing formation of continental glaciers & ballooning of ocean floor.
