Proteins have many structure, resulting in a wide range of functions: proteins are any chain of amino acid residues, but more formally are defined as the complete, often function form of the molecule. Amino acids can be group by non polar side chains, polar side chains, and electrically charged side chains: protein structure is determined by monomers and how many there are that form a polymer. Not only that, primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary structure also defines a protein: primary structure, the simplest form, is simple the sequence of amino acids in a protein. The variety is primary structures is essentially limitless because of 20 different amino acids and varying lengths between 5 and 10s of thousands. Primary structure is importance because the sequence of the amino acids defines the function of the protein: the two types of secondary protein structure are alpha-helix and beta-pleated sheet.
