EEB 2202 Final: Final Exam Notes
Document Summary
Concept of sexual selection was first introduced by charles darwin. Sexual selection- defined as selection for mating success rather than viability. Evolution of certain traits did not appear to enhance the survival of individuals. Selection acting on males through male-male competition for possession of females- intrasexual selection. Selection acting through female choice of mates- intersexual selection. Bateman"s principles- males show greater variation in number of offspring than females. Males show greater variation in number of matings. Number of offspring produced is more strongly correlated with the number of mates in males than in females. Trivers- for most male animals the cost of fertilization is low especially compaired to production of eggs by females. Hence males can potentially fertilize many different females, and produce many offspring, while a female"s ability to produce offspring is determined more by her ability to acquire energy than by the number of mates she obtains.
