Document Summary

Pharmacokinetics: area of pharmacology dealing with the absorption, distribution, biotransformation, and excretion of drugs. Factors of pharmacokinetics: route of administration. Subcutaneous: slower to take effect; seeps through skin layers: tb test. Intramuscular: slowest; stick into fibers of the muscle; dense so takes longer time to fade. Intravenous: fastest; stick into vein (not artery); takes <10 seconds to arrive at brain; fastest to fade. Intraperitoneal: used a lot in animals; put in space between peritoneum and gut; fast and easy for smaller animals. Want drug to hit lungs, or want it to act quickly. Topical application: put directly on the skin; patch, that may require a solvent to get across the skin, though the solvent may not be good for the skin: absorption and distribution. When it gets to half-life, the drug has worn off: rate of absorption depend on: Blood circulation at the site of administration. Factors of pharmacokinetics: drug absorption and distribution: transport across membrane.
