Document Summary

Nomothetic laws: general laws: apply to all people, at all times, in all situations. Ex: classical conditioning: rewards/ punishment -> behavior. Looks at these processes over time, certain points in life. Knowledge that you don"t have forever is what motivates u to do things. Perception of time plays fundamental role in selection and pursuit of goals. Social motives fall into 2 general categories. Focus on knowledge related goals, give priority. Focus on emotion related goals, give priority. When young focus on knowledge related goals - entire lifetime to benefit capitalize on and will sacrifice emotional goals to achieve. Young: time open-ended -> mental states that are planful, analytical. Interest in novel info reduced bc intertwined w/ future needs. Instead when endings are salient, people focus on present. Empirical evidence: lifecycle differences in salience of emotion, age differences in regulation of emotion, lifecycle differences in composition of social networks, social preferences as function of time.
