Asked in 188 to find a way of photographing running horses to help study their gaits: set up 12 cameras, each making an exposure in one- thousandth of a second, the photos recorded one-half-second intervals of movement. In 1877, muybridge settled stanford"s question with a single photographic negative showing stanford"s racehorse occident airborne in the midst of a gallop. This negative was lost, but it survives through woodcuts made at the time. He later made a lantern to project moving images of horses, but these were drawings copied from his photographs onto a revolving disc.
