• The struggle between liberty and authority
• Liberty: protection against tyranny of political rulers. Limitations on the powers that rulers can
exercise over the community
• Authority derived from heritage of conquests
o Necessary but highly dangerous
• Liberty attempted in two ways
o Obtaining recognition of certain immunities
• Protections and rights that if the ruler were to infringe upon, would justify a
general rebellion or specific resistance
o Establishment of constitutional checks
• Establishment of a government that gave temporary power that could be revoked by the
people offered a security that governing bodies would not take advantage of their rule and
abuse their power.
• Will of the people refers to the will of the majority
o If the majority choose to oppress part of their community, there need to be limits on
this power too
• Racism
• Misogyny
• Disability discrimination
• Homophobia
• Etc.
• Positions of power are held accountable
• Need for protection against the tyranny of prevailing opinions and feelings
• The only time it is justified to exercise power over another individual against their will is to
prevent harm to others
