Document Summary

All types of families are alike only in their success at serving basic purposes, such as providing emotional support for family members, taking care of elders, and raising the next generation. Leo tolstoy and larkin were right in one regard: there are many ways to screw up family. If presented with the terms nuclear extended family, you might be led to believe that a nuclear family is (cid:1688)normal(cid:1689) and the other is some king of deviation from the regular model. Nuclear family includes a parent or parents and children. Extended family includes parent(s), children, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. For some cultures, historical and current, using the word (cid:1688)family(cid:1689) to mean parents and children alone would be as off as using the term (cid:1688)body(cid:1689) to refer just to the heart. Matrilineage is the line of descendants that follows the mother"s line. A woman, her sisters, and brothers, and their mother would belong to the same matrilineal.
