Contemporary system has: central processing unit, primary storage, secondary storage, input device, output device, communication device. Central processing unit- manipulates data into more useful form and controls other parts. Primary storage- temporarily stores data and programs instructions (ram, cache, rom) Output devices- convert electronic data produced and display it in a form that can be. Secondary storage- stores data and programs even when computer is off (magnetic hard disk) Input devices- converts data and instructions into electronic form for input (mouse, keyboard) understood (printers, screens) Communication devices- provide communication between computer and networks. Magnetic signal = 1, lack of = 0. Cpu and primary storage determine speed and capabilities of device. Primary storage has three functions: storing software program executed, operating system, data program is using. Ram/ random access memory- internal primary storage.
