EARTH121 Chapter Notes - Chapter 14: Permafrost, Weathering, Blockfield
Document Summary
Mass wasting is the down slope movement of rock and soil due to gravity. Causes debris to fall that rivers can more easily carry away. Newer slopes waste faster, old slopes are gentler and gravity has a less dramatic effect. Angle of repose is the steepest angle at which a slope is stable. Depends on size of particles and water holding capacity. Earthquakes can also cause liquefaction if water content is high. Slide - debris slides along a slope. Flow - material flows like a liquid. Usually occurs when the slope has been oversteepened. Pieces of bedrock travels rapidly down a slope. More common during the spring (rain and melt can help to trigger a slide) Lahars are a type of debris flow that happens on volcanoes. Water saturated soil flows down a hill. Can t be observed except in tilted fence poles. Palsas are mounds of peat and ice. Bedrock shatters due to frost wedging to become felsenmeer.
