EARTH121 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Decay Heat, Lithification, Mass Wasting
Document Summary
Igneous: not layered, formed from hot magma, cools either slow or fast. Sedimentary: hardened, compacted sediment, layered or holds things (fossils, wind marks, water) Metamorphic: layers (distorted), created from other rocks from meta. Typically have a compact, crystalline tecture which is isotropic. Extrusive rocks lave small crystls du eto rapid cooling, intruiv have corse. Often anisotropic (foliated) with plate-like crystals of micas. Rocks ar broken down into smaller rocks or mineral grains, put into solution, chemical reactions. Weathering does not transport the materials it generates the raw materials for transport. Can occur at the surface or shallow subsurface: litho/hydro/atmosphere. How deep can air, water, microscopic forms of life penetrate: tree roots. Where did the glacial till come from: look at % material and track it back to the source. Ice expands in a crack in a rock, water can fill cracks, freeze and expand and pry it open.
