ECED 407 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9.8: Communication
Document Summary
Throughout the garden project there were numerous instances where the children represented their ideas symbolically. For example, in some cultures a rose means, love and a dandelion means, to attract attention. After the group discussion about flower symbolism the children were asked to pick a flower that told something about themselves and then express what that flower represented. The overall goal of the garden project was to positively affect the cognitive growth of each child, and to increase connectedness and a sense of respect for the local environment. These goals were achieved through a wide variety of activities, often initiated by the young children. The cognitive gains were in areas such as observation, communication and representational skills in addition to content knowledge. Communication skills were practiced as they discussed what plants they were seeing, and what they thought about the plants.
