Document Summary

Refers to the positive or negative feelings that are produced by particular situations. Autonomic: facilitate the behaviours and provide quick mobilization of energy for vigorous movement. The three above listed components are controlled by the amygdala in the case of fear. Amygdala: located in the temporal lobes, subdivided into approximately 12 regions. Receives sensory information from the neocortex, thalamus, and hippocampus and sends projections to the basal, accessory basal, and central nuclei, and to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex. Receives projection from the lateral nucleus and sends projections to the central nucleus and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex. Receives information from the basal, lateral, and accessory basal nuclei and sends projections to a wide variety of regions in the brain, including the hypothalamus, pons, midbrain, and medulla. Destruction of the central nucleus resulted in animals no longer showing fear when confronted with aversive stimuli. Studies in animals have looked at the amygdala s role in classical conditioning.
